Capacity Overview via Histogram

  • Updated

The histogram provides a visual representation of capacity data, clearly contrasting available and allocated capacity across resources or work centers. It serves as an effective decision-support tool by highlighting potential capacity bottlenecks.

In the Visual Advanced Production Scheduler (VAPS), you can access detailed histograms for work centers and their associated machine centers. These histograms enable quick identification of available capacity as well as overload situations, which are clearly marked in red.

Understanding the Histogram

The histogram functions as a capacity utilization chart, composed of the following elements:

  • Outer (black) line: Represents the maximum available capacity for the selected aggregation level, derived from the capacities of the underlying machine centers.

  • Grey-filled area: Displays the portion of capacity that will be utilized based on the current production schedule.

  • Red area: Highlights capacity overloads — instances where the scheduled workload exceeds available capacity, such as on Friday, February 12th in the example.

You can define the level of aggregation that best fits your needs by navigating to:
Actions → Capacity Management → Capacity Aggregation.

Inclusion of Standby Operations

A toggle in the VAPS setup dialog allows users to specify whether standby operations should be included in the histogram’s load curve. This helps to meet the varying user requirements:

  • Some prefer a focused view showing only currently scheduled workload.

  • Others value a broader overview that includes standby operations to anticipate future bottlenecks or unrealistic delivery timelines.

The image below compares two histograms: the left includes both scheduled and standby workloads, while the right excludes standby operations from the load curve.
