Modernisation of Produmex Scan

We implement Produmex Scan at multiple customers and are very happy with its functionality. However, the user interface and configurability lag behind the rest of the product and behind end-user expectations. We would like to request a comprehensive modernisation of the Scan client. The points below come from concrete implementation experience.

Concrete limitations we run into

1. Dated look and feel. The client looks like an old Windows CE/Mobile application. During demos and go-lives this is a recurring point of criticism from customers.
2. Main menu icons cannot be replaced. The main menu icons are embedded in the executable (BXMobileWH9.exe). They cannot be replaced or refreshed without editing the executable, which is unsupported and overwritten on every update.
3. Main menu buttons are not customisable. Labels of the main menu buttons cannot be changed through customisation (BXCUSTFD) — the variable is populated, but the screen renders the text from the language resources. As a result it is not possible to rename buttons, or to show, for example, counts/badges ("3 open pick lists") on the menu buttons.
4. No text formatting in lists. In the list screens (DataRepeater) no formatting is possible: no bold, italic or colour. Only font size can be set. This makes it impossible to visually highlight important information.
5. Fixed row height in list screens. On some screens (e.g. the pick list selection screen) the row height cannot be increased, so additional lines of information cannot be made visible. On other screens this does work — the behaviour is inconsistent between screens.
6. Customisation is labour-intensive. Many enrichments require SQL user queries with knowledge of internal tables and object types. Powerful, but high-threshold and error-prone; a modern, more configurable UI layer would make this more accessible.

Request

We request a comprehensive modernisation of the Produmex Scan client, along these lines:

• A modern, fresh UI (comparable to the Android client / the rest of the Boyum portfolio), consistent across all screens.
• Replaceable/brandable icons and configurable menu buttons (labels, and preferably badges with counts), without editing the executable.
• Formatting options in lists (bold/colour/row height), consistent across all screens.
• A more accessible configuration model for list display and labels, so that less SQL customisation is required.

Business case

A modern, brandable UI is increasingly a selection criterion for customers. The dated appearance and limited configurability of the Windows client detract from an otherwise strong product, and cost us extra time on workarounds (SQL customisation) at every implementation for things that ideally would be standard/configurable.
