UDT Handler Pickers

When we link a UDT to a UDT Handler UF, if the fields in the UDT have hardcoded valid values, a drop down menu will appear in the UDT Handler, but if we link the UDF to an object , oitm for example, the UDT Handler does not give the option to click the picker bubble to select an item.
