We did some research and it seems to be a known bug in the underlying technology (DevExpress). The bad news is that there will not be a quick fix available because they knew about this already 4 years ago.
The first reply back from the underlying component vendor is that this is not fixed. They suggest a workaround but unfortunately, that workaround would make the rest of the dashboards unusable.

Never Mind, figured it out. Right Click on the column header of the data grid, not the field, a menu will appear with a number of different choices (average, total, min/max, etc.)
Actually, when you total a column you only get the grand total and not the total when you filter out some items.
This is a problem and should be looked at by Boyum.
